Is Your Resume Too Long?

A resume too long?  No, never.  Your Maris Group Talent Tribe resume should be as long as you need it to be.  And include absolutely every word that you would use to describe anything you have ever done and are willing to do again for money.  You see, every Maris search starts with the client’s keyword.  And if the keyword isn’t in your resume, you simply won’t show up.  Cover all the relevant marketing, communications, product or digital skills and cover them in every way – such as web marketing, e-commerce and on-line shopping.  We may ask you to edit for relevance once you are being considered as a candidate for an immediate assignment.  But initially – give us the unabridged version.   Do you have a silly question?  Ask us – we would love to use it in our next blog!

Can you check the boxes for the freelance lifestyle?

imagesCAD30KBRAre you a marketing or communications professional who has always wanted to “go out on your own?”  Do you love product marketing or digital media but want to work with more flexibility?  Perhaps it is time to seriously explore becoming a consultant or freelancer (or as the IRS will refer to you, an independent contractor).  Following is the checklist we recommend to use in assessing your freelance readiness . . .
Have you consulted with a professional for advice on financial flexibility and tax ramifications?
 Have you banked six months of income in liquid assets?
 Do you have a fully functional remote office (smart phone, protected laptop or PC, scanner, current software etc.)?
 Have you registered a business entity with the State of Colorado?
 Do you have the confidence and comfort level to work independently?
 Have you identified the highest potential freelance clients as well as the “low hanging fruit?”
 Have you discussed with those around you about this lifestyle/income change?

Are you ready? How to tell with one easy question and your immediate response.

Independent Person paper dolls Thought BubblePeople call us all the time and ask about the lifestyle of a freelancer or consultant (better known by the IRS as a 1099 independent contractor), “How long till my first job?” and “When do I get my first paycheck?” Well, first, who knows! And second, it’s not a “job” or a “paycheck” in the traditional sense. If the very first thought someone has when considering becoming an independent contractor is when their paycheck will come, then perhaps they simply aren’t ready to be that independent. For a marketing, communications or digital professional, this is a way of life, not a career.  Some are ready and others are not.  Are you?
